Fruit Pastels

in this week’s Creative Drawing class, Grapes were the fruit of the day! Not sure that it counts as part of my 5 a day if you just draw the fruit rather than eat it!

We started off by looking at some work by different artists who had also drawn/painted grapes, one of which had drawn a hand holding a bunch of grapes but the grapes were in fact eyeballs, much to the disgust of the ladies in the class!

We selected a few grapes to start with and kicked off with the some charcoal drawings on white paper. Looking at the shapes of the grapes and the different oval shapes each one has depending on the angle. We also had a spotlight on the grapes which gave a nice definite shadow to work with.

After being reaquainted with the charcoals, we then reversed the process. We were all given a piece of paper that had been covered in black charcoal. Using a putty rubber to draw this time and rubbing out the charcoal to create the image of the grapes and create the highlights and then adding more charcoal to put in the darker areas and shadows.

We then went to the opposite end of the scale and were given a black piece of paper and had to draw using a white chalk. This proved harder to work out as you work with the highlights and almost draw in reverse of how you do normally!

The final piece that we work with was also on black paper, but this time we introduced colour into the drawing. Using bright coloured pastels and chalk, this time I managed to get much more of a 3D feel to the drawing using the colours to give shape and depth. The harsh light gave quite a shine to the grapes and the solid edged shadow. Blending the pastels into each other also toned down the brightness and finished with quite a nice colour purple!
